The Town of Winchester has an established Cultural District encompassing much of our downtown area (§ 22-1). The purpose of the Cultural District Commission is to prepare the application for a Cultural District Designation from the State of Connecticut. Once this designation is received, it is the purpose of the Commission to administer benefits and liaise with the state to maintain the designation.
The Cultural District Commission is comprised of 9 members appointed by the Board of Selectmen. To qualify for state designation, members should include representatives from the following areas:
Arts councils
Historical societies
Museums
Local artists (practicing in any medium such as visual art, music, dance)
Artists cooperatives
Cultural/artistic nonprofits
Theaters, Galleries, or other cultural institutions that operate for-profit
Local businesses
Tourism
Historic preservation
Educational institutions
Economic and community development
