Smart Landscaping Solutions

Overview

There are many ways in which you can take simple action to protect Winchester's water resources. Smart landscaping techniques can include: the
  • Installation of pervious pavers rather than concrete or asphalt;
  • Drip line trenches to encourage rainwater infiltration at the edge of roofs;
  • Stone swales to allow stormwater runoff to infiltrate into the ground rather than running down slope and off the property;
  • Vegetated buffers along watercourses to prevent stormwater and pollutants from flowing directly into the water.

The Highland Lake Watershed Association has a large amount of information regarding Highland Lake and can be accessed here: Home - Highland Lake Watershed Association. Remember, these tools should be used for all lakes!

Below are resources to consider when making improvements to your property. Remember to contact the Planning Office to determine the need for permits BEFORE starting work.
