The Winsted Water Works education and outreach team is partnering with the James McCarthy Scholarship Fund to provide an internship/scholarship program. They are seeking two qualified individuals interested in discovering the crucial role a water operator plays in the treatment of drinking water and wastewater. This program will cover all things water, starting at the reservoir with filtration and disinfection, exploring distribution and collection, and finishing at the wastewater treatment plant. Their vision is to introduce someone to the water industry and provide them with training and education so that they may be prepared to compete for a career in this essential and highly rewarding field. The interns will report each morning to the Department of Public Works building located at 189 Rowley Street, Winsted, CT where they will receive their directives for the day.
WORK SCHEDULE:
This position is part time with a schedule of Tuesday through Friday from 7AM - 3:30PM.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Interns will gain valuable field experience. The internship will begin at our Crystal Lake Reservoir where the interns will spend one week learning of the hydrological cycle, source water protection, filtration, disinfection and many mechanical aspects of the drinking water treatment process. Our interns will spend weeks two and three in the drinking water distribution and wastewater collection systems where they will accompany our maintainers and get a true hands-on view of these systems. The final week of the internship will be at the wastewater treatment plant where the interns will get a comprehensive overview of treating the collected wastewater to the point that it can be released to the watercourse and returned to the hydrological cycle. We will work with the interns to hone their leadership and communication skills, as well as to make professional connections within the water works community. Through experiential field trips and interviewing professionals in environmental careers, interns will learn about urban and natural water systems. Community engagement is an integral piece of the work we do. Interns will interact with the public on a daily basis and will gain a firm understanding of the importance that community relations plays in our industry. At the end of a successful internship, students will synthesize their experience by being awarded the James McCarthy Scholarship and complete the water management course at Gateway Community College.
