Each year, the Connecticut Fire Marshal's Association, Connecticut Fire Chief's Association, Office of the State Fire Marshal, and the Connecticut Fair Plan (an insurance industry organization) sponsor the Connecticut Fire Prevention Poster Contest. This contest is open to all students in the 4th and 5th grades.
The contest begins each October with judging of the local students' posters in December. The posters of the local 1st place winners are sent to the county level judges. The posters of the county winners are sent to the state judging committee where one poster for each grade are chosen as the statewide winners. An award of $150.00 is given to the county winners. The statewide winner receives an award of $750.00 and their school receives a matching grant of $500.00.
Because of the restrictions imposed by the COVID pandemic in December 2020, the Winchester Fire Marsal's Office was unable to hold a recognition ceremony and present the local winners with an award at that time.
On Tuesday June 8th, 2021, and Wednesday June 9th, 2021, the Fire Marshal's office was able to present awards to our local 4th and 5th grade winners and 1st runner ups at an awards ceremony at Pearson School. Each runner up received a Certificate of Appreciation for participating, and a $10 gift card to Target. Each 1st place winner received a certificate acknowledging they won the local contest and a $25 gift card to Target.
Mrs. Rebecca Billingsley, the teacher that assisted the students with their posters also received a Certificate of Appreciation.
Congratulations to the local winners and appreciation to all of the students that submitted posters for the contest.
