The Department of Public Works has announced a planned shimming of the pavement for Holabird Avenue to begin Tuesday, July 14, 2020. DPW reports the intent of the shim project is to improve the drivability until the road reconstruction project is completed, expected to be undertaken late 2022/early 2023. A shim coat is a thin layer of asphalt thicker than a microsurface that is applied to the existing surface of a street. Shims are usually used as temporary repair measures.
Director Jim Rollins notes that plans are for a multi-phase reconstruction project of Holabird Avenue from North Main Street to Florence Street.
Phase I is expected to include the replacement of the water main and service connections from where the Holabird Bridge construction ended to the Florence Street intersection. Engineering and funding applications are underway. Construction for Phase I is expected to commence during Spring/Summer of 2021.
Phase II will include the reconstruction of the storm drainage system, sidewalks, curbing, road base and the repaving from North Main Street to Colony Drive. Engineering and grant applications are underway for Phase II with construction expected to begin Spring of 2022.
Phase III includes reconstruction of storm drainage system, curbing, road base and repave. Engineering is underway and construction is expected to start Fall 2022 or Spring 2023.
